SUMMARY:

Bacterial infections represent a serious health problem, reaching global scales. The diseases that can be caused by these bacteria have been the subject of constant scientific research, since these microorganisms are increasingly resistant to conventional antibiotics. Bacterial infections are mainly related to the use of invasive procedures (venous catheters, indwelling urinary catheters, mechanical ventilation and others), immunosuppressants, long hospital stay, indiscriminate use of antibiotics, consumption of contaminated water and/or food and lack of basic sanitation. In the present study, caffeine was tested as an adjuvant to antibiotics, being adjuvants, molecules that enhance the effect of antibiotics. In addition to performing the proteomic profile analysis of Escherichia coli. It was observed that the concentration of 0.2 mg of caffeine modified the bacterial growth without making it completely unfeasible. The adjuvant study showed that caffeine is a potent adjuvant molecule in antibiotics, halving the minimal inhibitory concentration of ampicillin and streptomycin. The proteomic profile analyzes of the three generations revealed that caffeine caused significant changes in the expression of E. coli proteins. The results were analyzed in gels obtained by electrophoresis and confirmed by densitometric analysis. Taken together, the data found suggest that caffeine is a potential candidate for applications in antibacterial therapies.
