SUMMARY:

The waterproofing of surfaces resulting from urbanization changes the hydrological regime and the natural flows of water in cities, consequently bringing an increase in the risks of urban floods with the potential to cause damage to the population and property. For this reason, an urban flood risk assessment has been applied in the sustainable management of urban drainage. The risk of flooding is commonly assessed by hydrological models, while its mitigation is mainly given by the implementation of urban drainage systems. Compensatory techniques (TCs) are identified as effective solutions to reduce urban flooding and have been widely used for restoring the natural conditions of the basin and being a more sustainable alternative to conventional systems based on canalization implemented in most urban basins. These techniques can be particularly useful in closed (or endorheic) basins, where the flow is directed to lower inland regions producing large floods. Therefore, the present work aims to evaluate the performance of compensatory techniques to mitigate the danger of urban floods associated with the existing conventional drainage system in a closed urbanized basin with a tropical climate. The study was developed in a sub-basin of the city of Natal/RN using 1D/2D modeling of surface runoff with the Personal Computer Storm Water Management Model (PCSWMM) considering implantation scenarios bioretention cells (CB) and micro reservoirs (MR) in extreme precipitation events. By obtaining the flooding spots in the basin, it was observed that the 2D modeling proved to be very useful in predicting the behavior of closed basins, where it was observed that the criticality of floods occurs with greater intensity in the central depressions. The TC simulation showed a very limited performance for the control of flooded areas, a fact that can be explained by the low availability of areas due to the intense occupation of the basin, in addition to the magnitude of the events evaluated, which reduces the efficiency of the devices. The results also showed a better performance of BC due to the higher occupation considered and the infiltration, which tends to increase the volume captured by the cells.
