SUMMARY:

Extreme climatic events, such as prolonged droughts or intense rains, are phenomena that have great impacts on aquatic bodies. These events cause abrupt changes in the dynamics of light, temperature and nutrients in water bodies. Such physical-chemical factors promote changes in the trophic web and cause ecological imbalance, such degradation is more serious in more susceptible systems such as reservoirs in the Brazilian semiarid region. The particularities of the region with a deficient hydrological cycle and occupation of the basin by agriculture and livestock make water bodies more sensitive to these events and to eutrophication, the local rainfall still makes the complete depletion of reservoirs recurrent. Some studies indicate that after the entry of new waters, there is improvement in the water quality (reduction of suspended solids, blooms and nutrients) after these drying processes of the water bodies. The climate change scenario and the increase in the frequency of these extreme events demand an extensive study of changes in water quality caused by severe droughts and torrential rains. This work aims to evaluate the impacts of extreme weather events related to precipitation on the water quality of continental ecosystems on a global and regional scale. The study will consist of a scientometric analysis and an analysis of a long series of limnological data from a reservoir in the Brazilian semiarid region exposed to periods of rain above the historical average and periods of extreme drought in which it led to water depletion. In this way, we will be able to assess the key factors responsible for the potentiation of these impacts, including the eutrophication process, in the semi-arid region and to analyze the hypothesis of improvement in water quality after the complete drying of the reservoir.
