SUMMARY:

Wastewater treatment systems are becoming increasingly important because they reduce the environmental impacts caused by direct sewage discharge into receiving bodies. Among the various forms of existing sewage treatment, we can highlight the activated sludge process (AS), because it is widely used worldwide and produces a high quality effluent. In Brazil, however, many units still discharge low quality effluent, which is partly due to lack of funds for operation and maintenance, and mainly due to the use of inadequate design parameters. It is understood that the adoption of proper design parameters is essential for a station to be designed and operate properly. In addition, growing concerns about eutrophication have tightened regulations regarding nutrient removal, making it necessary to move from conventional AS to more sophisticated processes that promote nutrient removal, such as the two-stage system. In this sense, the objective of this work is to perform the mathematical modeling of an Activated Sludge Process in a hot climate region, aiming at the maximum nitrogen removal. For this, a two-stage Sequential Batch type pilot station will be used, which will initially be characterized by physicochemical analysis and by determining parameters of bacterial activity. Then, the characterization data obtained will be applied in a mathematical model, which will be evaluated in order to verify if it is able to describe the system behavior and optimize nitrogen removal.
