RESUMO:

Nitrogen biological removal systems may be found in multiple configurations, always by associating anoxic to oxic phases. From these, it can be highlighted the MLE (Modified Ludzack-Ettinger) model, an activated sludge system added with a pre anoxic stage to develop denitrification. Originally MLE systems removes carbonaceous e nitrogenous material trough microorganism activities that grow in suspension inside biological reactors. Aiming to increase removal rate of these contaminants and allow these types of systems to be more compact and cost effective, hybrid systems with suspended and fixed biomass growth were created by inserting medium support inside the aerobic reactor for biolfilm formation. In tropical regions, it is common to associate activated sludge with high rate anaerobic treatment like UASB reactor. This configuration brings many benefits, for instance; lower sludge production, stabilization of sludge from aerobic reactor and less demand for oxygen. Therefore, this research aims to examine the response of a pilot-scale hybrid sewage treatment system to variations of the operational parameters dissolved oxygen (DO) and sludge retention time (SRT), focusing on organic matter oxidation, nitrification and denitrification. The pilot-scale system will follow MLE configuration, integrated with a rotative cylinder filled with corrugated conduits and it will treat an affluent partially composed by wastewater from UASB reactor (75%) and pre-treated raw sewage (25%). Pre-treated raw sewage was added to provide substrate for denitrifying bacteria activity. Both fractions of the affluent comes from a WWTP located in warm region. The research will be divided in two phases, whereas in the first one the aerobic reactor will be dosed with two different DO concentration and SRT of 4 days. In the second phase, the same DO concentrations will be administrated likewise but under SRT of 10 days. The system will be operated with intern recirculation and sludge recirculation ratio of 1 and 0,5, respectively. Physicochemical analysis (nitrogen series, COD, TSS, VSS, pH, alkalinity, temperature) will be performed three days a week to monitor and evaluate pilot station performance. Nitrifying bacteria metabolism during variations of the operational regime will be studied using the respirometric analysis.
