PROPOSAL FOR FLOOD HAZARD MAPPING METHODOLOGY
Hazard map. Duration flood. HEC-RAS.
Unplanned urbanization and the consequent river banks undue occupation have caused material, environmental and socio-economic damage to society due to floods. Therefore, to predict with confidence the hydrological system behavior and the impacts of each flood event on the anthropic activities is important to minimize these damages. To do this, a flood hazard mapping can be done. The works that involve the topic usually use frequency, depth and speed as main indicators. However, the flood duration is also a relevant parameter, because long duration floods can cause soil erosion, water pollution and agricultural crops loss. Thus, the objective of this research is to propose a method to generate a flood hazard map that considers besides the usual criteria, the flood duration, using as a study area the low Piranhas-Açu river course. For this, was done the river hydraulic modeling with the HEC-RAS software, that provided velocity, depth and duration flood maps for 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 yeas return period. From the hazard map for each return period the hazard map of the region was obtained, based on the frequency-weighted average. The indicators hazard maps for each return period were useful, and it was possible to verify the influence of each indicator on the danger of flooding. However, the methodology for generating the global map decreased the flooding danger, causing the map showing low danger. The results indicate that the floods reach high depths, that the water flows slowly, resulting in high duration time flood.
