RESUMO: Eutrophication is the process of increasing primary productivity and organic matter through excessive nutrient enrichment. Phosphorus is the most limiting nutrient, and its biogeochemical cycle needs to be manipulated for water body restoration. Besides ceasing the external input, it is necessary to reduce the available phosphorus in the water column and in the sediment. Geoengineering techniques inactivate that nutrient through sorption using solid phase sorbents (SPS). The sorption includes the adsorption, precipitation and polymerization processes. In adsorption, the phosphate will accumulate on the surface of the material. Modified clays with addition of cations show good adsorption results, however, its cost is high, making it unfeasible. Thus, other SPS need to be tested. Some soil and water variables influence the adsorption process. Organic matter content, clay content and cations of the sortive complex (calcium, magnesium, aluminum) and soil pH. Redox state, humic substances and pH of water. The objective of this work is to evaluate the phosphorus adsorption potential of natural adsorbent materials for use in the restoration of water bodies. The hypothesis is that the materials with higher content of clay and silt will have a greater phosphorus adsorption potential present in water and that this potential will decrease with increasing pH of the water and under anoxic conditions. Adsorptive materials from five towns of Rio Grande do Norte will be tested: Red Yellow Latosoil of Extremoz; Fine refuse of scheelite mining in Currais Novos; Planosoil of Santa Cruz; Luvisoil chromic in Cruzeta and Sediment from the Itans reservoir in Caicó. We will carry out adsorption tests of the materials. For data analysis, we will use Langmuir isotherms model to establish the relationship between the amount of adsorbed phosphate ions and their equilibrium concentration. We will use Pearson correlation in order to compare the adsorption potential with the characteristics of the adsorbent material.
