RESUMO:

Slow sand filtration is a technique used since the 19th century, which can be described as a tank composed of fine-grained sand filter media placed on a gravel support layer. With the urbanization and growth of agricultural areas, surface water supply sources have become increasingly subject to various forms of pollution, contributing to the prevalence of protozoa in these water bodies. Several studies have pointed to the persistence of protozoa after disinfection, which infers that treatments including steps such as pre-ozonization, flocculation, sedimentation, rapid filtration and chlorination do not necessarily mean such effective barriers against species such as Cryptosporidium. Slow sand filtration is a low-cost, high-benefit technology. It depends on little or no addition of chemicals and has simple operation. It is possible to find studies pointing to bioantagonism as a mechanism for the removal of pathogenic microorganisms. In addition, there are also indications of slow sand filters that showed high efficiency when removing large concentrations of persistent microorganisms such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia cysts, with removals larger than 5 log. Due to its size and difficulty of removal, persistence in the environment and resistance to disinfection processes, removing Cryptosporidium can also mean the removal of all other protozoa present in the water. The slow sand filter also effectively removes turbidity, suspended solids and toxic metals in the treated water. This paper verified the influence of the uniformity coefficient on the performance of slow filters in coastal lagoons. It was possible to remove turbidity, apparent color, true color, detect particles mainly in the 1 μm range and verify the formation of the Schmutzdecke and the removal of total coliforms and E. coli.
