RESUMO:

There are several existing treatments for the removal of dissolved organics, which in turn can not be removed by conventional gravity separation treatments. The adsorption has been studied and several adsorbents exist in the market, one of them being activated carbon, which has already proved to be an excellent adsorbent. The use of granular activated carbon (CAG) has been shown to be very efficient, especially in the treatment of raw water from sources with a high degree of eutrophication. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of the adsorption step applied to a pilot station with double filtration and to define better concentrations of oxidant and coagulant through treatability tests in jarteste as well as to verify the possible concentrations of THM formed. Initially, two test phases were performed in the pilot plant. In the first phase the tests were with double filtration and 8 hours of career, these tests defined the best operating conditions to be applied in the second phase. The filtration rates experienced were 190, 210, 230 and 255 m³.m-².day -1 for FAP, which resulted in the FDA rates of 250, 280, 310 and 340 m³.m-².day -1 . As already shown by Duarte (2018), the results obtained in the first phase indicated FAP 3 as the best performance and the filtration rates studied did not significantly affect the quality of the filtered effluent. Based on the results of the first phase, four double filtration tests were carried out followed by adsorption. The tests performed with the FAP3 were 24 hours in duration, two with rates of 230/310 m³ / m².day and two 255/340 m³ / m².day (rate for: FAP 3 / FDA-FCAG), resulting in 4 double filtration setup followed by adsorption filters with three different granulometric bands (0.42-0.84, 0.42-1.68 and 0.71-1.68 mm). The results of the second phase indicated that for higher filtration rates there was a reduction in the efficiency of the filters' treatability and that the activated carbon filter of lower particle size (0.42-0.84) obtained better performance. However, the variables color and turbidity did not reach the limits required by the ordinance. Assays were carried out with the aim of optimizing the filtration with the increase of the adsorption step for the three grades of coal and different dosages of oxidant and coagulant. For the tests in jarteste the granulometry that obtained better performance was the intermediate one (0.42-1.68), whereas the dosage of the oxidant did not influence significantly of the studied parameters. However, it has been found that the best range of results is in the dosage of 5 mg / L of the oxidant. And the coagulant dosage significantly influenced the turbidity value. The THM concentrations evaluated in the distribution network were above the maximum allowed value of MS Ordinance No. 2914/2011. While the THM concentrations of the water treated in the tests in oil tankers obeyed the imposed limit. Indicating the feasibility of adopting the adsorption process as a resolution for the reduction of disinfection by-products. New assays with higher coagulant doses are recommended to define an optimal concentration for the characteristic of the source in question.
