RESUMO:

Studies focusing on flood hazard mapping usually use frequency, depth and velocity as the main indicators. However, the flood duration is also important because high duration floods cause soil erodibility, water pollution and the death of agriculture. The Piancó-Piranhas-Açu river basin is periodically flooded and one of its main economic activities is irrigated agriculture. Therefore, this basin is a place where the duration time is a relevant parameter to measure the flood hazard. Thus, the objective of this research is, using the Piranhas-Açu river basin as study area, to propose a flood hazard mapping methodology that considers besides the usual criteria, the flood duration. For this, it will be done the river hydraulic modeling with the HEC-RAS software, that provides velocity, depth and duration flood maps for five different return periods. With these maps will be generated a single flood hazard map.
