RESUMO:

Road-deposited sediment is an important environmental element for assessing contaminant levels in fluvial system. They are considered a potential risk for human health and aquatic biota, because of its association with organic and inorganic pollutants. These substances are sourced from vehicles exhausts, oils, and lubricants, wear of brakes and tires. In effect, RDS is considered a source of air pollution and the fluvial system intercepted by the highway. It must be mentioned that heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HPA) are considered major contaminant substances.Assessment of these substances are a relevant information that may be useful in strategies planning aimed at mitigating adverse impacts on water supply systems. The objective of this study is to assess contamination by heavy metals and HPA in RDS samples collected at the following points at the metropolitan Natal area: BR 101, Prudente de Morais Avenue, and BR 304. It will be analyzed heavy metals ((Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn e Al) and HPA (16 most relevant). Metals concentrations analysis will be made through Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). HPA analysis will be made through Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometer (CG-MS). Concentration data will be used to evaluate RDS contamination. It will be used Geo-accumulation and Enrichment Factor indices. In addition, data will be analyzed in the light of CONAMA resolution No. 344/2004, which defines guidelines for metals and HPAs levels.
