CAG ADSORPTION FOR REMOVAL OF DISINFECTION BY-PRODUCTS
Adsorption. Adsorption kinetics. Adsorption isotherm. Activated carbon filter. Jarteste. Trihalomethane. Total organic carbon.
During the disinfection process, the chlorine can react with the organic material that was not retained in the processes prior to the oxidation step, and persisted to the end, resulting in the formation of THM. Several existing treatments are aimed at the removal of the dissolved organics, which in turn can not be removed by conventional treatments of separation by gravity. The adsorption has been studied and several adsorbents exist in the market, one of them being activated carbon, which has already proved to be an excellent adsorbent. The use of granular activated charcoal (CAG) has been shown to be very efficient, especially in the treatment of raw water from sources with high eutrophication (HERZING et al., 1977; LALEZARY et al., 1986). In view of the above, the study to be developed aims to evaluate the efficiency of the adsorption step applied to a pilot station with direct filtration and double filtration. The research will be divided into two phases. In the first phase will be carried out bench tests with the objective of evaluating the efficiency of two operational configurations, one with pre-adsorption and the other with post adsorption for a granulometric range of activated carbon of 0.41-1.61 mm and different Concentrations of oxidant and coagulant. In the second phase preliminary tests will be carried out in the pilot plant to define the best operational conditions to be applied in 24-hour filtration careers in the double filtration and direct filtration configurations. Both configurations followed by three adsorption filters with different particle sizes (0.71- 1.68; 0.42-1.68; 0.42-0.84 mm), in this phase will be carried out analyzes of total organic carbon and Trihalomethanes . Kinetic adsorption models for raw water (25, 37 and 50 ° C) and the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm parameters for raw water (25 ° C) in activated carbon (0.71- 1.68; 0.42-1.68; 0.42-0.84 mm).
