RESUMO:

Phosphorous (P) is a limiting nutrient of eutrophication. Extinguishing point P sources of surface waters, although essential, is not enough towards mitigating eutrophication for the sake of internal P loading and nonpoint pollution. Depending on its bioavailability potential, P within sediment is subject to release during long periods, aggravating nutrient enrichment. P compounds in sediment are the key to reveal P bioavailability. Likewise, land use affects not only soil, but also all sorts of compartments that may include sediment. Currently, there is little consideration given to how land use activity in reservoir catchments contributes on P chemistry in sediments. This study aims to draw a comparative between P species within sediment of 16 tropical semi-arid shallow reservoirs of Piancó-Piranhas-Assu catchment and its different conditions of land use. In order to determine and quantify all P fractions within the samples, a chemical fractionation method will be executed, intending to sort the species amongst loosely sorbed P (P-water), reductant soluble P (P-BD), P bound to metal oxides (P-NaOH), P bound to organic matter (Phumic), calcium bound P (P-HCl) and refractory P (P-residual). Each catchment area will have its soil categorized in dense vegetation, sparse vegetation, exposed soil, water, agriculture and urban, with the assistance of a satellite image geoprocessing software. Aiming to identify the relationship between soil and P fraction data, a principal component analysis (PCA) will be performed. As a result, catchment area which its soil is found to have higher anthropic modification is expected to exhibit greater P concentrations within reservoirs sediment. Moreover, this research aims to access whether P fraction concentrations can be correlated to catchment land uses, improving our understanding of the factors influencing P chemistry in sediments.
