THE IMPACT OF MATHEMATICS CONTENT FROM KHAN ACADEMY PLATFORM ON THE PERFORMANCE OF ELEMENTARY EDUCATION STUDENTS

RESUMO:

The Basic Education Development Index (IDEB) has been one of the most important reports for monitoring education in Brazil. The results of the Index over the last few years warn that not all strategies adopted to improve teaching have been effective, given the high number of results below expectations. IDEB alone does not reveal all the facets on which a good education depends, and it does not provide a detailed filter of each shift from the institutions in which it is benchmarked (which is a warning about the accuracy of the results per school). However, this is not enough to ignore such an important index as well as the fact that the targets related to it are not being reached in many localities. This includes one of the public schools of Rio Grande do Norte, which will be the locus of this research. This school occupies one of the lowest IDEB positions in the state, as well as low rates for the approved students in several grades, concerning the internal goals idealized by the institution. Face to this context, we propose to verify whether there is evidence of qualitative and/or quantitative improvements in the performance of a group of students to which the mathematical content available on the Khan Academy platform will be applied in the classroom. The study was built, in its initial phase, under a bibliographic research methodology, in order to define the technical terms used in the text and to build systematic reviews on related themes. The practical phase with students is structured as a case study, with analysis of results in both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The chosen group is an elementary education fourth grade class, and it will be divided into control group and experimental group, in order to guarantee the maximum homogeneity in the distribution of students in each set. The experimental group will have one meeting a week, during a school bimester, and under proper orientation, to explore and practice the activities proposed by the platform for their school grade. At the end of the experiment, we will draw a comparison between the two groups observed, based on both their performance in the bimonthly regular tests, as well as a qualitative evaluation report built in partnership with the regular teacher of the class and the pedagogical coordination of the school. This research will focus on the institution's internal goals, as well as the projected targets for each grade throughout the current school year. The expected results  after this project are to help the partner institution, as well as other public schools, to enhance their mathematics teaching practice.
