SUMMARY:

In this study, Calotropis procera fiber was used as an adsorbent for reactive dye, one of the most used by the textile industry. For a greater interaction and increase in the percentage of removal, the fiber underwent a functionalization with chitosan, the use of chitosan is justified by its non-toxicity, biodegradability and biocompatibility. Considering that most of the materials used for adsorption are not biodegradable, the search for solutions is extremely important, therefore, the objective of this work was to use a natural fiber, Calotropis Procera, together with chitosan for the removal of color of the textile effluent. Fiber characteristics were evaluated with SEM, FTIR and XRD analyses, the effluent was analyzed for pH, turbidity, conductivity, %O2 and UV-Vis absorbance, these procedures were repeated after the effluent came into contact with the fiber. The SEM analyzes showed that Calotropis procera has a smooth surface, without convolutions and internally hollow, even after functionalization, infrared analyzes indicated the presence of carboxylic and hydroxyl groups. The efficiency of color extraction in a dyeing effluent with reactive dye AZUL BG-R CONC was analyzed, obtaining a removal of 100%. The results obtained showed that the Calotropis procera fiber functionalized with chitosan is suitable for adsorption of reactive dye in effluent, being a viable, simple and environmentally correct alternative, providing a more appropriate destination for an existing residue.
