SUMMARY:

The use of plants in folk medicine contributes significantly to the prevention, treatment and cure of diseases. An example of these plants is Eplingiella fruticosa (Lamiaceae), a native shrub from northeastern Brazil, with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action. Although known in folk medicine, there is little scientific research with this vegetable, opening up scope for the development of research that discovers and proves which are the bioactive actions that act on diseases. These actions boosted the realization of this research, in particular, using the essential oil (EO). This research aimed to test the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the essential oil extracted from the leaves of Eplingiella fruticosa (OEAV) and its potential application by microemulsion system (SME). The essential oil exhibited mostly the components: 1.8 - Cineol (29.15%), followed by β-Caryophyllene (12.57%), cis - calamenene (8.71%) and β-Pinene (4.86% ). The formulated SMEAV is composed of surfactant Tween 80, essential oil of E. fruticosa and water, it has physical-chemical properties of pH = 5, droplet diameter 12.5 nm, polydispersity index 0.22 and resistance to thermal stress up to 95ºC . For the action, 3 microorganisms were tested, the yeast candida albicans showed to be sensitive, while the bacteria S. aureus and E. coli showed low sensitivity when in contact with the OEAV. For the antioxidant activity evaluated by the Total Antioxidant Capacity method, the encapsulation by the microemulsion system (SMEAV) potentiated the antioxidant activity by 3x when compared to the free OEAV. Based on these results, it is possible to conclude that SMEAV is a biodegradable system, does not pose risks to human health and the environment and that OEAV has antioxidant and antifungal action against C. albicans, which makes them potential products for application in industrial textile, cosmetotextile and biomedical.
