SUMMARY:

The Brejo Paraibano micro-region stands out for its uniqueness in terms of its dynamics and complexity in the agrarian scenario, largely due to the demands of capital which, in turn, accompanied its market situation, stimulating the advances and retractions of the most advantageous agricultural economic cycles in each period. Therefore, the transformations in rural areas, the delineation of land structures and, in the case of architecture, the financial resources accumulated from plantations were decisive for the emergence of mills and head houses, as well as contributed to the formation of an aristocracy and to the desire to reflect bourgeois codes. In this context, considering the interest in investigating the materiality of the architecture, this research uses phenomenology to analyze the perceptions of social actors of the Brejo Paraibano, that is, of those who dwell in the rural architecture of the region. The methodological procedures were developed in accordance with the objectives of the study, through a bibliographic and documentary survey, field research, interviews, architectural analysis and cataloging, as well as phenomenological reading. In summary, the results obtained will be classified as a set of information schematized around two axes: a) architectural and constructive materiality and their transformations according to the agricultural economic cycles; b) phenomenological perception rural dwellers have of the physical space – their representations and references of the past and present. From this perspective, it is hoped that the study will make a relevant contribution to the field of built environment and phenomenology, both of which are treated as instruments for valuing memory and knowledge, thus, contributing to the preservation of the multiplicity of stories related to architecture and to "place", as well as subsidizing new reflections.
