SUMMARY:

This thesis project is part of the discussions of creative groups in architecture with a focus on the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies (IAUS or Institute) between the 1960's and 1990s, and is inserted in the field of architectural theory and history. IAUS was a non-governmental organization founded by architect Peter Eisenman focused on education, research, exhibitions, publications and professional practice. The Institute was active in New York City (USA) between 1967 and 1985, and developed a series of critical positions in the face of approaches present in the field of American architecture and urbanism, and exerted influence in the fields of teaching and practice after the 1960s. Therefore, this thesis project's main objective is to verify whether the theoretical and practical contribution of the IAUS can characterize it as a creative group in the scope of architecture and urbanism. To this end, the approaches of De Masi (1999) and Waisman (2013) were used as the main methodological references to support the definitions of a creative group and the investigative tripod of theory, history and criticism. Therefore, this work is divided into 9 parts: the Introduction and Contextualization present a brief overview of the approach of academic literature regarding the IAUS; Methodology (3) describes the approach of creative groups and the recurrence of the IAUS theme in academic literature; the Bibliographical Review (4) provides a cross-sectional overview of how different creative groups manifested themselves in history from the end of the 19th century onwards; Bibliographic review (5), (6), (7) and (8) present the IAUS, the training process based on CASE (Conference of Architects for the Study of the Environment), and the main activities developed. Finally, session 09 presents the structure of the thesis to be developed and the main research elements
