SUMMARY:

This work deals with relationships between form and uses of architecture in the context of the incidence of security artifacts on buildings. In a case study carried out in the Santa Rosa neighborhood, Campina Grande, Paraíba, gradual processes of fortification and distancing between private space and public space have been observed through the multiplication of high walls and security equipment, factors considered in the literature to enhance the feeling of insecurity on the streets. This study aims to point out possible effects of urban form and its uses on the incidence of security devices. To this end, the work is divided into two theoretical-methodological axes: the axis of the Historical-morphological Formation of Santa Rosa and Insecurity, based on historiographical and bibliographical reviews; and the axis of Form and Uses of Architecture, anchored in the morphological analysis of space and building form, considering topological accessibility – from global and local perspectives – as a factor inducing movement and uses associated with distinct patterns of movement. Based on Space Syntax Analysis (SSA) instruments, the main streets in the neighborhood were ranked according to their topological accessibility values, which were compared to data relating to land use, indicative of urban animation potential, and to data relating to the incidence of safety devices, the degree of building-street interface and the visual fields on the streets analyzed. Through these data overlays, considered for the day and night periods, it was realized that the scenario of “closing” the fronts of properties at nightfall is independent of the value of topological accessibility and the diversity of street uses. However, there was a milder trend towards distancing between the private and the public, as well as a lower presence of security devices on streets with greater topological accessibility and diversity of uses.
