SUMMARY:

Regarding integrated model of education provides an increase in the student’s skills, in 2008, Ceará Government implemented the Network of Professional Education within its territory, uniting High School with full-time technical level professional training. The system has more than 120 units, including renovated and newly built schools. Nonetheless in building new schools, a Standard Project was designed, and used regardless of the environmental characteristics and singularities concerning each local. After a decade, some buildings have showed up several problems, resulting in expenses that could have been avoided. Considering this situation, it happens to constitute an excellent way to analyze the project at stake by comparing its original architectural design and technical specifications with the existing environmental conditions and current natural eventualities. Starting questions are: How does the use of the standard design influence maintenance costs? Did the execution project follow the standard design or was it adapted? What standard design features would need to be adjusted to ensure its adaptability to deployment conditions? The hypothesis advocated suggests that the standard design due the FNDE/MEC does not meet all geographical and climatic conditions, however, it is possible to reduce maintenance costs and improve building performance through adjustments in the architectural programming and materials required all along technical specifications. To support that aim, a multiple case study was conducted, involving six from these school buildings, chosen based on their different locations within Ceará local particularities. The research is framed as a Technical-Diagnostic Evaluation, basing on: (i) analysis as for design specifications in relation to the environmental conditions implantation site; (ii) inspection to observe the current state of the materials used; (iii) costs verification-maintenance. In general, it is expected that the research, in addition to developing a complete diagnosis as for selected buildings, will provide subsidies that allow the environment optimization a more efficient allocation regard State Government’s investments given the construction of new school buildings. This pre-defense document presents the empirical work carried out and brings the first indicators for completion of the thesis in the second semester of 2023.
