SUMMARY:

The literature on architectural creativity, mostly contemplated in association with approaches on the design process in architecture, demonstrates the difficulty of specifying how it manifests itself. It is known that there are no rigid procedures that favors its occurrence, and that it incorporates subjective factors derived from the accumulation of knowledge based on the experiences and particular aptitudes of individuals. Research addresses the difficulty of teaching architectural creativity, and points out that its development requires practice. However, both the academic and the labor market contexts are sensitive to free experimentation, implying in risks that the designer cannot or does not always want to submit. Reflecting on strategic practices for creative exercise, this research project sees architecture and urbanism competitions as a viable alternative. By questioning in what ways architecture competitions, constituting themselves as experimental design practices, encourage the exercise of architectural creativity, it aims to highlight the role of these events as a potential creative exercise for the public active in the area. To this end, it is proposed to (i) highlight the specificities of architectural creativity within the comprehensive field of creativity, emphasizing the role of experimentation in this context; (ii) relate architectural creativity with the practice of competitions; and (iii) verify the occurrence of developments in the competitions, in the professional and disciplinary spheres, in the light of the discourse of regular participants. Thus, it is expected that the investigations provide data and arguments that allow justifying the suitability of the space of competitions for the development of creativity.
