SUMMARY:

The railroad, that marked the history of the city of Teresina in the 1920s, presents itself as a scar in the orthogonality of its layout and creates discontinuities, introducing changes in the originally planned urban fabric. The split in the urban form separates the areas north of the road from the consolidated areas in the center, causing a southeast direction in the direction of its growth, influencing the urban composition. Throughout the 1930s and 1950s, there was an intense operation of the railway system in the interurban transport of people and goods. Between 1950 and 1970, the railroad was affected by competition from highways, ending the interurban passenger transport activities in the 1970s, maintaining the activities of transporting goods. In the 1990s, works were carried out to take advantage of the layout of the existing road with the implementation of intraurban passenger transport, the “Pre-Metrô”. But, how did the introduction of these technical innovations and the materialization of the railroad's layout interfere in the configuration and contours of Teresina's physical growth? The implementation of the railroad certainly influenced in the sense of creating connections and disconnections in the nature and form of occupation of the urban space around the railroad. In addition, it promoted a progressive expansion of the physical space occupation of the city. Factors such as leading role and privileged reach in urban insertion were decisive in the implementation of the Pre-Metrô intra-urban transport system. The object of study is the relationship between the modernization of the circulation networks on rails and the transformation that occurred in the urban morphology of the city. Such a study is justified by the need to broaden the understanding of the relationship between the railroad and the city, but also by the need to identify potentialities and risks, as well as conflicts and convergences of the influencing process in the growth of occupation of urban spaces, stimulated by the existence of railroads within the urban fabric. The main objective is to understand the repercussions and implications of the historical process of implantation of the railway in the structuring of the physical and socio-spatial design of the city. Specifically, it seeks to analyze the transformations in the spatial configuration of the urban form as a result of the introduction of technical/technological innovations in the qualification of the circulation system on rails; understand the interference of uses and forms of occupation in the conflicts and convergences of the transformation process of the urban fabric; analyze the influences of the railway transport system in the modernization of the city; and, finally, to identify the potentialities and risks of moving people and goods through the technical railway network as a means of intra-urban mobility for Teresina. The discussion focuses on the methodology used in the Historical Geographic and Urban Morphology approach, which is based on a historical and theoretical conceptual set on the occupation of urban spaces and the technical network of rail transport in an urban context. Therefore, it is based on contributions from authors such as: Manuel Castells (1983), Raquel Rolnik (1995), Jean Lojkine (1997), Lewis Mumford (1998), José Lamas (2000), Ermínia Maricato (2000), Henri Lefebvre (2002), David Harvery (2006), Milton Santos (2006), Ana Fani Carlos (2007), Anthony Giddens (2008), Gercinair Gandara (2011), Horacio Capel (2011), Vitor Oliveira (2015) and Doralice Maia (2016), among others. Still using the “Maps of Conflicts” by Henri Acselrad and Luis Coli (2008) as a method for the analysis and understanding of the new territorialities and territorial orders. From the historical, theoretical and methodological basis, the development begins with the geographic and historical contextualization of the city of Teresina and a reflection on the contributions of the modernization of transport systems for the urban growth of the city, to draw preliminary conclusions on the subject.
