Walkable City Quality: Evaluation Walkability in the city of Patos (PB)
Walkability. Pedestrian. Pato's Centre
Patos (PB) is a county located in the interior of Paraíba that has experienced huge development in recent years. This growth, along with the lack of people-oriented urban planning, has led to negative outcomes for the city related to urban mobility and accessibility. In the surveyed region, the population usually travels on foot, as the center of the county has the main nodal points, such as the municipal hall, the public market, the county forum, banks, the city's commerce and among others. Studies on walkability are gaining much more space. Several research discuss how some elements of the environment are positively constructed or displaced in the foot.
Walkability is a conscious choice for locomotion on foot. This decision provides the user with social interactions and experience with the urban environment, two fundamental points for building collective bonds. Therefore, the objective of this work is to understand how the components of the urban infrastructure for walking influence the movement on foot in the center of Patos - PB, evaluating the walkability, in its spatial cut, from the methodology that seeks to understand the practical and subjective issues of urban space. Consequently, it intends to achieve the Walkability Index of the downtown area, thus relating the urban infrastructure with mobility on foot. For this purpose, categories and walkability indicators were listed and applied in a spatial area, which has several land uses. Ultimately, propose possible scenarios with design guidelines, which lead to the requalification or enhancement of sidewalks, hence generating better conditions for pedestrians
