SUMMARY:

The configurations of spaces frequented by children, the opportunities they offer and the social interactions that take place there have an influence on child development and remain in the memory of adults. On the other hand, social inequality generates gaps in guaranteeing the basic rights of socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals, making it difficult for them to access many spaces and services. Thus, assuming that understanding children's perception can promote opportunities for incorporating new knowledge into city planning, the following question is asked: What types of public spaces are frequented/used by children living in areas in situations of socioeconomic vulnerability? What are your favorite and despised places? Which of these places remain present in your memories? What characteristics should public spaces located in vulnerable areas have for children to appropriate them and turn them into places of well-being capable of eliciting good memories of the city? The research will be based on Environmental Psychology, and on concepts such as environmental perception, space appropriation, place identity, connection to the place and restorative ambiences. As an assumption, it is considered that, in general, residents of socioeconomically vulnerable areas have difficulty accessing places that are suitable for use, reinforce feelings of security, are characterized as restorative environments and promote positive memories of the city. Thus, the research hypothesis indicates that, as children in situations of poverty appropriate places that are not conducive to their healthy development, knowing their perceptions and memories can support proposals to provide the area close to their place of residence with equipment aimed at the meeting the needs of this population, impacting on their quality of life and the emergence of good memories of the city. The thesis approached this reality through a study in the city of Fortaleza, capital of Ceará, having as a spatial cut the Dom Hélder Câmara Community, located in Praia do Futuro, Fortaleza. The general objective of the research was to understand the appropriation of this vulnerable area based on the perceptions and memories of people who lived there in childhood and of children who live there today, in order to elaborate indicators to improve the quality of life of this population. The empirical investigation had a qualitative approach, and resorted to multi-methods, through a bibliographic survey, questionnaires, structured and semi-structured interviews, application of an evaluation form containing emotion maps and a poem of desires. Participants fell into three categories: (1) children currently living in the community; (2) adults responsible for participating children who lived on site during childhood; (3) technicians/experts who study the reality of children living in poverty in the city or work with them. As partial results, the main problems found were systematized, highlighting possible ways to be considered in their confrontation, in order to enrich the debate on the subject in question and generate subsidies that contribute to public policies in the sector. It emphasizes the importance of not only relying on the resilience of the population, but, above all, favoring that children enjoy essential rights, including an environment capable of providing dignity and quality of life for all.
