SUMMARY:

By using public spaces as places of experience and expression, people reaffirm themselves as agents who participate and act in the dynamics of urban life. In this process of aggregating experiences, space becomes a producer of meaning. Spatial experiences are dynamic and change over time, since the ways in which people experience and enjoy the city also change according to the stage of life of each one and the changes in society itself. From such understandings, the present research assumes as object of study the experiences, uses and generational practices in public space. Because they involve understanding ourselves as people and society, such issues are complex and for a long time were minimized by science, so there is still a lot to advance, especially with regard to small and medium-sized cities. That said, the objective of the study is to understand how young and old people experience the D. Luiz de Brito square (Matriz) in Vitória de Santo Antão-PE. For this, three specific objectives were outlined: (i) articulate the notions of experience, public space and generational practices in order to support the intended empirical activity; (ii) identify the dynamics of use and appropriation of that space by young and old people; (iii) analyze the meanings of that space for the different age groups, paying attention to the divergences and convergences between them. The investigated area comprises D. Luiz de Brito square (Matriz) and João Fernandes Viêira street, which borders it and since 2021 participates in the “Praça da Gente” program (it has exclusive use for pedestrians on weekend nights and holidays, which induces a differentiated square-street relationship). This is a qualitative and phenomenological-based research, involving a multimethod approach that, in addition to the literature review, carried out an empirical research, in which it adopted: interviews (semi-structured and informal conversations), behavioral observation (naturalistic and systematic) and technical evaluation of the space. Although the collected data are still being processed, the initial analysis presented in this qualification indicates that, due to perceptions, interests and characteristic ways of appropriation of each age, people from different age groups experience free public spaces in different ways.
