SUMMARY:

The expansion of cities and the needs of urban life result in changes and imbalances in natural spaces. These, initially covered by vegetation, are being transformed through deforestation, earthworks, land occupation and gradual waterproofing. Such actions alter the landscapes and dynamics of the natural environments of the open spaces of buildings, making them increasingly restricted and fragmented into patches of different scales, distribution and uses. The structure of the transformed landscape and the resulting vegetable cover not only influences the landscape composition and environmental comfort conditions, but also the ecological functions of the place, affecting the lives of all other organisms. In the coastal zone, the constant interest in land use raises concerns about the perspective of these changes, impacting landscapes of relevant historical, cultural and environmental value. As a reflection of this process, laws provide for strategies to protect the environment, with the aim of maintaining ecological balance, as well as actions that promote the recovery of local ecosystems. However, the municipal legislation of Natal does not show the attributes considered in the indications of land use and occupation of the Environmental Protection Zones - ZPAs. Given this gap, this research questions how the vegetable cover of coastal open spaces can be used as a parameter to define and delimit areas reserved for environmental preservation and conservation in Natal? As a hypothesis, it is considered that the landscape structure of open spaces, based on native vegetable cover, is a reference to be observed to support urban and environmental planning strategies of the municipality. For this research, the spatial cut involves 4 coastal environmental units, delimited by the city's urban rules as ZPAs, which cover: the Parque Estadual das Dunas de Natal and the area adjacent to the park; the Morro do Careca and continuous fixed dunes; the Forte dos Reis Magos and its surroundings and the Farol de Mãe Luiza and its surroundings. The investigation aims to understand the distribution and structure of the landscape from the vegetable cover of the coastal ZPAs of Natal, aiming to understand the biophysical contribution, identify the landscape units, discuss the elements that compose it and highlight the analysis attributes that can be incorporated into the legislation. Among the methodological procedures, it is intended to deepen the bibliographic review, map the extension of the vegetable cover from satellite images, recognize the landscape units from the attributes of the vegetable cover, register the defining aspects of the landscape using photography and interpret data with the production of maps. The pilot study carried out at the Farol de Mãe Luiza ZPA and its surroundings made it possible to test and refine the methodological procedures, in addition to elaborating the first considerations based on the partial results
