SUMMARY:

This work emphasizes a theme whose reflections and analyzes are based on the relationship between man and space in central areas, having the urban park as a reference. It reflects a concern, of a growing problem in our cities, the gradual loss of public spaces for coexistence, meetings and leisure.

According to Silva, Silva and Lima (2015), the planning and management of urban space in Campina Grande are clearly out of step with the socio-environmental dynamics of the city. Public open spaces are disjointed and threatened with undue occupation. In some areas of the city, public spaces are undervalued and unsafe, with no accessibility and uninviting. Among these underutilized spaces, there is what comprises the Evaldo Cruz Park, popularly known as Açude Novo, the universe of study of this research.

The park is located in the Centro district, classified in a study by Barros Filhos et al (2015) as a qualified public space in the city, in terms of infrastructure and location. It was widely used and appropriated by the population in the years that followed its inauguration until the mid-1990s, when the area began to decline. Over time it has undergone some reforms and is currently a well-located public space, located in a strongly integrated city center, has good physical and urban structure, with good potential for use, offering areas for permanence, it is also bordered by urban equipment that attracts a large number of people daily, however, according to Silva (2015) it presents low levels of use and appropriation by the population – one of the great ironies of the city.

Given this situation, in which the park loses its importance within the social context of the city, the question is: According to the perception of old users, how did the process of transformation of the relations of uses and appropriations between the population of Campinas and Parque Evaldo take place Cross?

The general objective of this work is to rescue memories and perceptions that tell the history of the Evaldo Cruz Park, focusing on the transformations in the relations of use and appropriation that occurred over time, in order to highlight the importance that the park once had, as a space public, for the population of Campina Grande. The specific objectives are: (1) To discuss recent issues about the socio-spatial transformations that involve the public space in the contemporary city, using the urban park as a reference;

(2) Present the Evaldo Cruz Park according to historical aspects and its physical characteristics;

(3) Describe the transformations in the relations of uses and appropriations that took place in the Evaldo Cruz park over time, based on the memory and perception of its users.

The research is a case study, which aims to explain the park from the perspective of how it was/is felt, perceived, inserted in its spatial context and used. For this work, knowledge of the past was perceived from reports of the present, transmitted orally, through the narratives of different generations, whose memories and past are not identical, but are incorporated and re-signified in their daily lives. As sources of evidence for the case study were used oral history, document analysis and observation in loco, and as a method of data analysis, content analysis of Bardin (1977).
