SUMMARY:

BIM (Building Information Modeling) was developed with the aim of reversing the conservative posture of the AEC (architecture, engineering and construction) industry, which is still considered fragmented. Succar (2009) defines BIM as an interrelated set of processes, technologies and policies for managing the flow of digital information. And implementing this technology requires restructuring project companies and reorganizing project development processes. Considering that we are facing a technological advance and a transformation in the professional practice of the architect, the general objective of this research is to analyze the use of BIM technology in architecture offices in Paraíba and how the architect is inserted in this context, in order to contribute to the panorama of the professional activity of the architect in face of this technology. Regarding the methodological procedures, the research is classified as a case study, investigating the design process with the use of BIM technology and the architect role in this context, and survey-type research, in order to draw an overview of the implementation of BIM in Paraíba. The evaluation and analysis of data was carried out based on the Content Analysis methodology, proposed by Bardin (2011). The survey results show that despite using a BIM tool, some professionals are still associated with a traditional design process that maintains a sequential workflow and late integration between disciplines. Thus, to achieve the proposed benefits of BIM technology, architecture professionals need to be willing to make significant changes to currently adopted practices.
