SUMMARY:

This research addresses the relationship between creative processes and the references used in projects developed by architects in the context of professional graduate studies, with a case study in the Mestrado Profissional em Arquitetura, Projeto e Meio Ambiente (MPAPMA) at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). According to the literature, the design process, in general, comes from a poorly structured problem, whose solution is not unique, and basically occurs in three phases: analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Furthermore, based on the assumption that ideas do not come out of nowhere, it is considered that reference studies play an important role in feeding the creative process, as well as prior knowledge arising from the intellectual baggage acquired by the designer. The central question-problem of the research is: How do the creative processes of Professional Masters students relate to their previous experiences as professionals and to the new design reference studies developed by them in the course? Thus, the aim is to understand how the creative processes expressed in the projects and technical reports of MPAPMA/UFRN students are developed and how they relate to their design references. For this, the methodological procedures were divided into three main stages. Initially, a literature review was carried out in order to deepen the main concepts, methods, and strategies that guide the theme of creative processes and references used in architectural projects. Then, a survey and documentary analysis of the final projects and technical reports completed at MPAPMA/UFRN from 2010 to 2019 was carried out, part of which was selected for more detailed analysis according to the research inclusion criteria. Finally, an attempt was made to categorize and assess the degree of impact of design references in the selected works, based on analysis categories derived mainly from Philippe Boudon's Architecturologie. So far, the importance of design reference studies for architectural design and its direct influence on the construction of new design baggage that contributed to the search for creative and differentiated solutions in relation to the usual design practice of students, especially considering the technical, functional and representation scales as the most decisive.
