SUMMARY:

The research is focused on the design qualification of historic house museums. It is based upon architectural studies on both museums and housing, tied to concepts regarding poetics, space geometry, imaginative memory, and practical life. As a museum, the studied typology needs preservation and learning practices within exhibition spaces, so it may transcend its condition of a mere house open to the public. In this sense, the main challenge perceived in housemuseums is to transform a residential building, with its objects and memories, into a museological institution. The research question emerges from this challenge: how do architecture and museography influence the perception of a house-museum as an imaginative memory? In this research, the relationships between form, image, exhibition spaces and housing spaces within house museums, as well as the public interaction with such aspects, cause reflective considerations about housing architecture and museography design. Thus, space can be considered a form of language, essential to portray and perceive an intimate life within a house-museum. The initial hypothesis is then to identify the architectural elements that, alongside museography design, enable the communication of a given imaginative memory for a house-museum. The research has been developed with mixed qualitative methods and procedures that allowed a broad understanding of the phenomena, in its sense and meaning, through a process of interactive and simultaneous steps. The four house-museums selected as case studies were examined with attention to space analysis and user perception, simultaneously. The data gathered from both moments of the research (technical and user perception) were cross analysed, allowing the development of parameters confronted with the state of the art. The conclusions rediscuss the problem initially stated, suggesting ways to rethink the comprehension of housing poetics and imaginative memory within the process that changes a house into a house-museum
