SUMMARY:

The research project that we present here for the qualification exam starts a reflection on the dialectical relations between appropriation and domination in the context of the capitalist production of space and, for that, observes the case of the neighborhood of Mãe Luíza in Natal, in Rio Grande do Norte.

Based on the insurgent character of the socio-spatial practices that take place in its territory, we seek to unveil them to understand their role in overcoming the living conditions imposed by urban segregation. As an initial occupation of areas bordering the beach, with task forces and road paving campaigns, rat removal and housing construction, financing, construction and shared management of equipment for collective use such as schools and multipurpose gym: the organization around the permanence and the questioning of the main needs of the neighborhood, as well as the social articulation to remedy them, inserts Mãe Luíza in a context of struggles and conquests that are an important milestone in the production of the peripheral space of Natal.

Its path points to overcoming the “survival agenda” and highlights the “citizenship agenda” as an emancipatory horizon, making us question, what is there specific to the understanding of how social groups rise in the search to transform material and immaterial conditions of everyday life. Supported by the reflections of the French philosopher Henri Lefebvre, our hypothesis is that the simultaneous and contradictory processes of appropriation and domination of space, resulting from and resulting from the different socio-spatial practices that take place in the neighborhood, move towards the construction of a “space differential ”(LEFEBVRE, 2013 [1974]), being that which expresses the conquest of the right to differences, resistance and pluralities, from which the possibilities of social transformation are emphasized. Using the methodological strategies considered successful for this same author - which is configured in the seminal reference of this work - to answer the research question and walk the paths towards proving (or not) our hypothesis, the thesis is structured based on regressive-progressive method. Thus, we cast an initially descriptive and curious look at the insurgency in the neighborhood of Mãe Luíza, returning to the moments that contributed to the shaping of these relationships and returning to the present to weave the seams that allow us to understand their specificities. We also use qualitative research procedures and techniques, such as semi-structured interviews supported, in turn, in the dialogue between the methods Paroles d’habitants (LEFEBVRE, 1970; HAUMONT, 2001; RAYMOND, 2011) and Comprehensive Interview (KAUFFMAN, 2013). We hope that, through investigation, emphasis and privilege to the analysis of the lived, “means” through which and where the scenario of conquests and empowerment of the urban peripheral nuclei is built, this work contributes to ratify the dimension of use and appropriation in production the urban space and the consequent resumption and expansion of the encounter, the playfulness, the work and the Right to the City.
