SUMMARY:

Child development can be associated with the configurations of the spaces frequented by the children, the opportunities that the place offers and the social interactions they establish there. On the other hand, social inequality creates gaps in the guarantee of the basic rights of non-socioeconomically favored individuals, making it difficult to access many spaces and services. Thus, assuming that children in poverty have difficulties to enjoy places that provide them with psychophysiological balance, health and well-being, the question is: What types of public spaces are frequented/used by children living in poverty areas? What are your favorite places? What do these children have in these places, and what would they like/would need to find in them? What characteristics should the public spaces of precarious urban areas have for such children to appropriate and convert them into places with effects and possibilities of restoration? As a hypothesis, it is advocated that, in general, children in poverty have difficulty accessing places that present adequate conditions for use, promote safety sensations and characterize themselves as restorative environments; thus, they appropriate physically and socially vulnerable places, or little conducive to their healthy development, so that, in order to promote a higher quality of life for this population, it would be necessary for the government to invest in the construction and maintenance of equipment located near their place of residence and aimed at meeting their immediate needs. The thesis aims to assimilate this reality through a comparative study in precarious regions of two countries with similar cultural bases and different Human Development Index (HDI): Brazil and Portugal. The research will be based on the area of person-environment relations, nodits in Environmental Psychology, and on concepts such as environmental perception, appropriation of space, place identity, connection to the place, restorative environments, articulated from the idea of ambience. Its general objective will be to understand how children exposed to situations of poverty perceive and appropriate the urban spaces they frequent. Empirical investigation will have a qualitative and phenomenological nature (centered on the perception of the child), being methodologically performed from an ethnographic inspiration approach and use of participant observation. The strategy for data collection will be multimethods with various activities mounted in a guide with their own investigative directions (interview, maps of emotions, drawings, multi-language workshops and creation of history about the space where children live and appropriate). In addition to these instruments, interviews will be conducted with adults (parents/guardians, teachers, community leaders, politicians, architects and urban planners responsible for urban infrastructure). It is expected that the future results enrich the debate about the reality experienced by children in poverty, contributing to public policies in the sector. This document, presented to the qualification, corresponds to the revised and detailed research project, containing the theoretical and methodological delimitation of the intended investigation.
