SUMMARY:

This research, still under development, aims to investigate the influence of colonization projects on the urban formation of Pium and Punaú, in Rio Grande do Norte. These colonies were implemented in the second half of the 1950s in a context where the Government and the Archdiocese of Natal, aiming to develop and expand commercial agriculture, which until now was only subsistence, requested the arrival of 23 Japanese families to teach agricultural techniques to Brazilian settlers who were interested in learning and continuing the practice. The Pium colony was a state initiative, headed by INIC, INCRA's predecessor, while the Punaú colony was an initiative of the Pio XII Foundation of the Archdiocese of Natal. To carry out this investigation, we have some specific objectives: i) To examine the actions of the State and the Church in the processes of implementation of the two colonization projects; ii) Understand how the urban formation of Pium and Punaú took place and its historical development iii) Analyze the level of influence or mutual adaptation between Japanese and Brazilian cultures in order to counteract how to use and appropriate the space of the colony; be it the building or the urban space. The work is predominantly based on information collected from interviews with settlers and administrators, since today there are no more official records or documents in the archives of the agencies responsible for colonization projects. Preliminary results show that the urban development of the sites followed different paths, since, as Punaú was administered by the Church, it received adequate assistance and prospered, although it stagnated as it ceased to be a colony to become a district. On the other hand, Pium, abandoned by INIC before reaching the emancipation of the nucleus, declined and its land use was modified by the growth of the metropolitan region and tourist activities on the south coast, attracting large residential condominiums, commerce and services. A development, however, not tied to the former colony. Two similar cases, implemented only three years apart, but with quite different results regarding the production of urban space, given the administrative difference and the connection of the territory with the totality.
