SUMMARY:

Observing the city in its decaying passages gives the individual the privilege of witnessing a frame of an endless narrative. In the same way, human agglomerations in their varying scales and periods have in their warp the grooves of the process that outlines their shapes in the snapshot conferred by the observer. While one city is built, another goes out and ruins and rubble are the effects of these processes in which one set of imagery is invariably surpassed by other relevant indices for the perception of stone narratives that are elaborated in the urban fabric. Their peculiarities have been present since their inception, but they are also revealed in the treatment applied to them. The debates that took place between the 1900s and 1940s, which had as their backdrop the Brazilian cities, allow us to answer questions about the interests in dispute, as well as allow to observe the changes of sensitivity about the alteration processes of the built collection of the cities and about the remaining elements of their past. Thus, the research aims to identify the role played by the dissolving images of Brazilian cities in the construction of their memory and identity in the early twentieth century, as well as the underlying motivations and early evidence of sensitivity towards the preservation of these buildings. The main hypothesis is that the sensitive transformation of the “dissolving images” of the cities and the efforts to preserve the stone annals would operate in feedback with the elaboration of the identity and construction of the national memory, and there was also a distinction in the debates about safeguarding or condemning ruined buildings according to their previous or imagined social function. The objects of study used for the analysis consisted of debates and manifestations regarding demolition events, the recognition of ruins and the formation of safeguard sensibility, supported by the forge of the identity, memory and culture mobilized by the traditional feature buildings of Brazilian cities in the early twentieth century. The methodology is based on the principles of the Indiciary Paradigm, representations, cultural history, unfolding in techniques of image reading and textual analysis. Considering which social groups they represent, which historical processes they witness / remember and if the style and aesthetics they carry in itself is consistent with the wording of the city's "stone annals". At first they denounce the ugliness, anachronism and unhealthiness of the old buildings, and later disseminate the recreation of these same elements, which become a compositional part of the city's "annals of stone".
