SUMMARY:

This research project structures itself around the countryside-city theme and of how urbanization has contributed to the transformation of rurality spaces, especially among the city fringes. In Natal’s case, the space around Avenida Moema Tinoco da Cunha Lima is facing transformations in this sense, with impacts in everyday life of its inhabitants, as a result of the avenue partial duplication project, as well as of other projects and programs. Thereby, agricultural communities located on the limits of the road are threatened by the transformations triggered by the project, as well as other normative determinations, such as the one that states that Natal’s county is completely urbanized. In this sense, we question: what are the possibilities of permanence of rurality spaces around Avenida Moema Tinoco? It is assumed as hypothesis that the possibilities of permanence of rurality spaces around Avenida Moema Tinoco depend on the recognition of its territoriality as right of the citizens of the countryside in spaces of rurality in the city. The object of the thesis is the relation between the urbanization process and the dimension of the lived space in agricultural areas at city’s fringe and its empiric field is the surroundings of Avenida Moema Tinoco. The research general objective is to point possibilities of continuity of spaces of rural life and production in a county beneath the urban domain. Figure as specifics objects: 1) To recognize the countryside’s place around Avenida Moema Tinoco, through the life and work spaces connected to rurality; 2) To identify possibilities of resistance of countryside spaces along the avenue from the resident’s point of view; 3) To understand how the logic of the conceived space manifest in the agricultural productive areas surrounding Avenida Moema Tinoco. The adopted methodology is based on the regressive-progressive method discussed by Henri Lefebvre (1978,1999) together with the concept of the spatial triad (perceived-conceived-lived) define by the same author (2013). Therefore, the procedures include realization of interviews with the agents involved in the production of the studied space – using, for the farmers, the inhabitant’s word method (HAUMONT, 2001; RAYMOND, 2001; LEFEBVRE, 1978) - realization of routes, elaboration of infographics and literature review regarding the countryside-city and everyday life themes. It is expected that the research may contribute to a reflection of the need of approximation between the lived and conceived space, in other words, of its real and planned dimension, besides evidencing the importance of rurality spaces permanence around cities.
