RESUMO:

Faced with the current capitalist model, alternative ways of life have emerged seeking changes in relation to the environmental impacts, socioeconomic disparities and cultural aspects that exist today. In this context, ecovillages are intentional communities focused on sustainability and self-sufficiency, whose conception is through participatory projects. In this context, it is questioned how the dimensions of sustainability - social, economic, environmental and world view - can establish links with elements of ecovillage architecture design and whether private and collective environments reflect the way of life of the community and are reflected on them. The study constitutes in a theoretical-methodological contribution to the Architectural Design and Environmental Psychology, based on three anchors: (i) Sustainable Ways of Life (SWL) involve psychological tendencies and behaviors that reveal a concern with the conditions of the physical environment and with the integrity of the social environment; (ii) Sustainable Behavior (SB) influences the physical environment and human quality of life; (iii) Design that reflects the intentions and desires of those who plan it. Therefore the object of study is the relationship between ecovillage design and SWL, focusing on the elements of architectural design. The hypothesis constructed according above described is that although the ecological dimension is the most contemplated in the proposal (text) and in the architectural design (drawing) of the Brazilian ecovillage, the use of the collective spaces reflect the way of life of the community in ecovillages in which collective environments are privileged, community life is favored (social dimension). The purpose of the ongoing study is to understand the importance of collective environments in ecovillage proposals and projects in the Brazilian context in the perspective of the Person-Environment Relationship. The research, of a qualitative nature, will adopt an ethnographic posture, being carried out through multiple case studies and multi-method approach, conciliating technical evaluation and user perception. In its first year, we sought to define ecovillage and clarify its characteristics, for which it was fundamental to participate in specific training. The next steps will be: (1) to develop a panel of experts in order to understand and relate sustainable ways of life to the dimensions of sustainability; (2) to carry out case studies in order to establish links between SWL and architectural elements design in Brazilian ecovillages, and to verify how collective environments are related to community life and sustainability dimensions; and (3) define an international benchmark, which may assist in the validation of the results obtained.
