RESUMO:

At the beginning of the twentieth century, accelerated processes of changes in the Brazilian urban scenario. The growing number of visitors faced a changing landscape; the poles installed in regular spaces, sounds and new transport of modernity that gradually gain the streets that are passing or are in the process of remodeling, as well as the new habits and constructions that only find meaning in the modern space, are the new signs which emanate not only from postcards sent to family and friends in Europe. What they see when it comes to framing the landscape in their cameras or describing them in their diaries is the city that modernizes itself in new frameworks, often denying or erasing its colonial features. The city, when observed - by foreign or local looks, passing or residents - elicited reactions shared through images and texts. By concentrating the analysis on the answers to the architecture and the Brazilian city in these supports in the light of Cultural History and the iconological analysis, one observes the manufacture of representations that arose from this observation of the Brazilian urban landscape; were produced and circulated, and invested with the function of representation and reference of this city, dyed with the patina of documentary authenticity. Publications such as illustrated albums and series of postcards brought the urban transformations as protagonists: following the recent trails of trains that touched cities with colonial interior features or the frameworks that diluted the presence of the traditional faces of the city, modernity in the snapshots insinuated timidly in the new urban elements or in overwhelming presence, in the devastation of the old quarters that gave place to the roadblocks of the new metropolis. In the pages of the illustrated periodicals, the debates on urban planning in Rio de Janeiro were favorable for its development, in which lines insinuated the importance of measures that sought to "remedy an evil of our old settlements - the narrow and tortuous streets." The paths traveled by the images and the texts in these varied media, therefore, take the urgency to investigate the recurrence of the representations of the Brazilian city in the foreign and national production in the last quarter of the century and first decades of the twentieth century, a period in which the first steps of modernity in the urban landscape are established.
