RESUMO:

During the 1930s, two movements of modernization were underway in Brazil: in pedagogy, the New School (Escola Nova) education movement, and in architecture, the Modern Movement. In the educational sector, the ideas of the New School movement have resulted in reforms of public education in several states across the country. To implement the desired pedagogy of teaching, new models of school buildings were designed, under the recommendation of being built according to the principles of modern architecture, at a time when this architecture was not yet consolidated in Brazil. Our objective is to understand the relationship between the ideas of the New School and the modernization of school architecture in Brazil during the 1930s. Our object of empirical study are the school buildings that present principles of modern architecture which resulted from the educational reforms for the application of ideas of the New School, in Rio de Janeiro (1934-1937), in São Paulo (1936-1939) and in Paraíba (1936-1939). Thus, we seek to clarify if, and how, different debates and ideologies, in the case of pedagogy, may have influenced the modernization of architecture during this span of time. To do so, we confront the architectural content of the discourses about these schools, found in periodicals of the time (1930-1945), with the analysis of selected school buildings, carried out in two spheres of architecture - physiognomy, by comparison with literature, and the spatial configuration, by spatial syntax (HILLIER and HANSON, 1984). Preliminary results indicate that the spatial configuration of these schools may have favored the practices of Escola Nova due to a greater relation with the exterior of the building and low capacity of visual monitoring from the board. However, aesthetic artifice that contradicted the discourses on how school buildings should be were still adopted, even if in many ways they followed the principles of modern architecture as desired.
