RESUMO:
The present dissertation reviews samples of architectural production held in João Pessoa, Paraíba between the years 1985 and 2000, in order to verify if the architecture produced in the period has sufficiently distinct formal characteristics to differentiate if from the so-called modern architecture of the previous period. The chosen time frame covers the period between 1985 and 2000, for the year 1985 was marked by the constructions of the building Atrium and the building Guarujá, first examples of an architectural production characterizing solely of contemporary production. The end of the time frame of this work is in the year 2000 marked by the construction of the Residence of the architect Gilberto Guedes that uses elements of the contemporary architecture incorporated to the modernist principles (modern continuation). After the characterization of contemporary architecture through the theoretical framework, and the identification of architectural production of João Pessoa, accomplished through research in academic papers, it was possible to identify the presence of architectural contained copies of some of these features. The purpose of this research is to understand the architectural production in João Pessoa this season, checking the repercussions arising from the discourse and production of contemporary architecture.
