RESUMO:

This study has been developed from an initial question: How can the understanding of the urban space by people who do not have the sense of vision contribute to the planning of a city more suited to all people? As a preliminary answer to this question we have defended the hypothesis that the recognition of the sensitive perception of city by the blind people would enable a more conscious use of this information by urban planning, making the city more accessible to all. Thus, based on the social and physical aspects of visual impairment, this thesis was designed to investigate the resources used by the blind person during his/her movement in the urban environment. In this context, the general aim of the empirical study was to understand the elements that make up the perception of the urban space by blind people so as to detect ideals favorable to urban space planning. In according to a paradigm of spatial analysis based on the human being and the person-environment relationship, the research investigated the perception of blind people during their movement through the city, based on their orientation/mobility conditions and the concepts of urban ambience, environmental experience, affordance and wayfinding. In order to provoke the discussion about  multisensory strategies used in the understanding of urban space, evoking senses such as smell, hearing, touch and taste, the research took place in two moments: (i) visits to orientation and mobility training centers; (ii) contact with blind people willing to contribute to the research and who presented conditions for autonomous mobility by the city. Aiming to understand the resources used daily by these people in their locomotion process, this last step corresponded to a planned experiment that occurred in an urban sector adjacent to the Instituto de Cegos do Rio Grande do Norte, in Alecrim neighborhood, Natal, RN. Activity included individualized interviews, a commented route accompanied by technological resources, story design and focal group, which subsidized the production of sensory maps of the chosen urban area. This document has presented part of the thesis under development, to be defended until the end of the semester 2019.2. To date, data obtained have indicated that it is possible to affirm that the recognition/identification of the environment by the blind people is subsidized by their perception, cognition and memory, and that the analysis of the movement of this body in space has allowed the definition of multisensory subsidies for an architectural projection that not only provides more spatial
