RESUMO:

Social Housing is a broad and multidisciplinary theme that has its own specificities. It has been present in Brazilian reality since 1930s. Given its value to the country scenery its natural to find the topic in Architecture and Urbanism courses. With that knowledge, came the questions: How is Brazilian Architecture and Urbanism courses addressing Social Housing teaching? What factors were relevant for that ways of approach? Starting from these questions, the developing thesis main goal is characterize the current panorama of Social House design teaching in Brazil. Specific goals of the research are: (1) identify determinant time reference marks that leads to nowadays outlook on Brazilian Social Housing field; (2) comprehend from professors perspective how the Social Housing thematic was included in Brazilian Architecture and Urbanism graduate courses, especially related to design teaching; (3) to recognize the ways the subject is being approached in design classes at Architecture and Urbanism Brazilian courses. The theory research is bases on a conceptual framework that involves debates about housing, habitability and social housing – still in studying. The empirical knowledge stage was resorted to a multimethod data collection strategy undertaken in three steps: (1st) comprehension on how Brazilians courses approaches the Social Housing subject; (2nd) understanding professors perceptions about Social Housing theme at Brazilian graduation courses; (3rd) visiting institutions that stand out at this field (in progress in 2018 second semester). Based on the results found until the present moment it is able to say that, although not always explicit at pedagogical projects or curricular grades, Social Housing subject is present in most researched courses. Either inside disciplines or at research projects and extension programs. Oftentimes the option to work on the Social Housing topic is a professor’s personal initiative. They shape the discipline even if its summary do not predefine Social Housing as its main subject. In contrast, UFMG’s night course is a graduation course which curricular proposal is on Social Housing theme. It was verified that having gone through more technical, economical and pragmatic discussions in the first half of 20th century, currently the academic debates on the field focus mainly on: (i) Social Housing modes of design considering future users issues and necessities; (ii) urban and environmental impact of housing enterprises; (iii) intervention at urban preexisting areas such as shantytowns or similar places; (iv) architectonical and building programs and types; (v) technological advancements incorporation to building process. It is noticed also that Social Housing is a kind of study that leads to integration among Architecture and Urbanism disciplines or even between that graduation and others. In addition, it requires participation and collaboration from outsiders such as market professionals, government agents and mainly members from the community. That gives the students the opportunity to interact with the social and urban reality that surrounds them.
