RESUMO:

The use and operation stages of a building comprehend the period of most energy consumption. This is due to the usage of active systems, such as air-conditioning, heating and artificial lighting, which are the main cause for high-energy consumption. In Brazil, the building sector consumes more than 50% of the electricity. One thing that contributes considerably to this high consumption is the fact that buildings are not adapted to local climate. This means that demand for active systems could be reduced by using bioclimatic strategies to promote thermal and luminous comfort. Moreover, specialized literature recognizes that energy efficiency in buildings is one of the areas with greatest potential for reducing energy consumption. Considering this potential, the practice of evaluating buildings performance in design stages has gained ground. However, the same does not occur in buildings’ operation stages. Due to this, there is a lack of information about the real performance of buildings in use in Brazil. Internationally, there is more information on this. In addition, studies showed that the performance achieved during the usage stage is, in some cases, worse than the pre-estimated performance. Therefore, evaluating the performance of buildings in use, including those that have already been evaluated during the design stage, is very relevant, since it allows to identify the positive and negative characteristics of these buildings and to verify if the building is actually performing as expected. Considering this, this research aims to evaluate the performance of an office building in use in Ceará, focusing on the bioclimatic strategies used to promote thermal and lighting comfort to users. For this, the Post-Occupancy Evaluation method was adopted, through which it was possible to collect quantitative measurements on site, and qualitative data through the application of a survey with the building’s occupants and direct observation. After the data was collected, it was compared with reference values, which allowed determining the building’s thermal and luminous performance, and users’ satisfaction level.
