RESUMO:

Architectural education methods hardly are used to promote creativity and many professionals apply knowledge in the conventional way (KOWALTOWSKI, BIANCHI, OETRECHE, 2011). Creativity comes from effort and does not occur without external influences; "To create is to produce a work of imagination" (SMITH, SMITH, 2015). The "creative idea" (MAHFUZ, 1995) contains the basic principle of the design during its immaterial formulation (MAHFUZ, 1995). However, it is from the encounter between mind and media that design becomes visible to the world (MAHFUZ, 1995; FILHO, LASSANCE, 2008; KHAN, 2010; FARIA, 2014). Between the forms of architectural visualization, there are "Study Models" (MILLS, 2011), a tool of spatial exploration. A study model can generate information as quickly as the sketch and offers the designer better visualization possibilities and creative freedom (MILLS, 2011; SMITH, SMITH, 2015; MARANGONI, 2011). Some of the materials and tools used to create study models are: cardboard, paperboard and recycled materials. However, although study models are important work and reflection tools, most of Brazilian architecture schools do little to explore it (MARANGONI, 2011). In this sense, the main objective of this study is to analyze the study model as a tool for the design and support of creativity, considering academic and professional practices of architecture. The present study has the character of a qualitative investigation and will be developed from bibliographical research - about creativity, design process, physical models and recognized architects and firms that use models in their processes, such as, Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) and Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG); documentary research on the models produced in these processes; two workshops with models, held at Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte and at the Federal University of Ceará; and data analysis. Finally, it is reported that those models produced in the Creativity Workshops have great potential as a tool of creative support. Many of those could continue to be worked on and developed into subsequent phases of creative exploration. It was possible to stimulate the generation of an architectural parti on which to continue the project development, through the integration with other tools, such as computer and/or manual design and computational models. It is verified strong relevance of study models to induce creativity during the architectural design process.
