RESUMO:

The thermal sensation of elderly people in their home environment has not been explored much in Brazil. Most studies focus on the thermal comfort of young people. However, the number of elderly people is growing around the world, and in Brazil this population is estimated to more than triple by 2050 in relation to 2010, which will mean 29.75% of the entire Brazilian population. The ageing of the human body entails a number of physiological changes that impair the body's thermal regulation mechanisms and exert a negative influence over the individual's thermal sensation. In hot climates regions, extreme heat may have an impact on the health of this population, who are exposed to aggravating risks of hyperthermia and dehydration. Our objective is to build a mathematical model to determine the index of thermal comfort for elderly people living in the semi-arid region of the Brazilian Northeast, based on the modelling of environmental, individual and subjective variables, with a view to contributing to the architectural designing of residential buildings. For that purpose, an experimental study was carried out between April and December 2016 with the following research tools: structured interviews, the environment observation form and environmental variable data measurement. This study was conducted on 270 not bedridden, healthy people aged over 60 inside their homes, situated in the city of Campina Grande, in the semiarid region of the State of Paraíba, Brazil. Access to their homes was facilitated by Agentes Comunitários de Saúde – "Community Health Agents" - (ACS) of the City Council Basic Care Department. The analytical study was based on general statistical analyses (descriptive and exploratory data analyses) and inferential statistical analyses (statistical tests of the statistical calculation results), through adjustment of the ANOVA models, multiple-comparison hypothesis test Tukey-HSD and Pearson's chi-squared test. In the propositional study, the responses of the sample units (elderly people) to thermal sensation categories (hot, comfortable and cold) were transformed in Probit estimations to elaborate thermal sensation graphs and determine thermal comfort parameters. The results confirmed the hypothesis that elderly people are more sensitive to cold and more tolerant to heat in hot climate regions. Then, by applying the statistical technique of multivariate analysis (canonical correlation analysis), the physiological and environmental indices (FI and EI) were determined for a later proposal of the thermal comfort index for elderly people (TCIEP). Until the present moment, we conclude that the hypothesis has been accepted.
