RESUMO:

Junkspace (2001), an essay written by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas presents, from a seemingly chaotic textual composition, a description of an urban landscape that is no longer regulated by any traditional notion of the disciplinary field of architecture. This urban landscape is sensed only through the ubiquity of the spatial productive systems, promoted by globalization. Junkspace names what Koolhaas observes that is underlying contemporary modernity, such as urban forms, expressions and logics constituents of the generic or global city of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. We state, therefore, that Junkspace is related to the understanding of urban-territorial transformations from a socio-cultural view of the city, in which the spatial production is seen as a symptom of the process of development of our culture and society. Therefore, we question: after all, how can Junkspace contribute to the understanding of cities today? Starting from the research question, the work developed here followed a line of a theoretical-methodological exploration, in order to reach the general goal of understand Junkspace under the light of a discussion about the contemporary urban phenomenon, contributing to the academic debate. Considering the theoretical aspect of our work, a bibliographical review on the author of Junkspace and his main works was done, as well as on authors who discuss topics addressed in Koolhaas’ text. We also developed methodological activities in order to explore the limits of the Junkspace as a category for understanding contemporary architecture, as a pragmatic and empirical tool of apprehension of the city. This work is not concluded yet, however, we consider that the possibilities of questioning Junkspace, in the light of an urban cultural debate, as well as of anchoring the spatialization of the term created by Koolhaas from the discussion and its relation with the theoretical frameworks selected for the construction of the debate, do contribute to the discussion and apprehension of the contemporary urban phenomenon.
