RESUMO:
This master thesis presents an overview of modernist architecture built in Natal between the 1930s and 1980s, by structuring a collection and its classification, with main method of analysis the aspect of form, able to indicate similarities and contrasts between the different manifestations that were produced during the fifty years of modernist architecture in Natal. The work is divided into three chapters: the first presents the premodern architecture produced between 1930 and 1949, and shows the first signs of architectural renovation in Natal, evidence of the arrival of modernity in the city; the second, "Natal’s Modern architecture", exposes the modernist production built in Natal between the 1950’s and the 1980’s, including institutional, religious, commercial buildings and residential or mixed-use towers; and the third and last chapter, "Natal’s Modern residential architecture" presents the residential cases and their different manifestations, built between the 50s and 70s. As methodological procedures adopted, were used the tabulation form, necessary in the process of organizing the materials, which organizes in standard format the data available from different sources consulted; and the chart of valuation criteria, used to classify the cataloged cases, constructed according to a formal canon established in the literature which are defined in the format of six expressive categories defined by Trigueiro, et al (2014): (1) Relation of the building with the building sit/city block/surroundings; (2) Facade/ volumetry; (3) structure/constructive aspects; (4) Plan aspect; (5) Environmental comfort aspects; (5) Others elements.
