RESUMO:

On this thesis, we aim to investigate the effects exerted by morphological changes in open spaces of urban resettlement over social life of people who use those spaces. Leaning on a morphological approach, guided by the theory of The Social Logic of Space (or space syntax, as commonly known) (HILLIER; HANSON, 1984), we investigate the life of individuals through patterns of encounters between then. These encounters would be organized by possibilities and restrictions imposed by the architecture of the settlement and the relation with the architecture of the city. Starting from an analytics and comparative perspective, we study the morphology of two settlements that are part of a process of resettlement in the city of Natal/RN: a Favela – Favela do Maruim – and a Housing Estate – Residencial São Pedro – built to accommodate the removed inhabitants of the favela. The Favela do Maruim, organic self-built settlement dating back to the 1920 decade, was born as a fishing village near the Potengi River and the Harbour of Natal. Its growth started to prevent the expansion of the Harbour Zone what led, during a long time, target for a possible removal. After a long process of discussion about the area, in 2016, about 170 families that occupied the community were transferred to a Housing Estate, located in the same neighbourhood, geometric planned with 25 buildings of 04 pavements each (200 apartments) distributed in a regular grid, built in the context of national housing program Minha Casa, Minha Vida. By believing that daily life in open spaces was a vital part of the social life to the inhabitants of the favela, we analysed and compare the morphology of those spaces in each one of the settlements in search to find answers about the kinds of encounters in the favela and in the housing estate, and if, and how the morphological changes is altering the logics of social life pre-existing in reality. For this we will follow two paths: analysing the space (virtual community) and the society (real community). To the study of space, axial and segment analysis characterized the insertion of each settlement in the structure of the city in diverse metric radii and topological, the internal structure and the immediate surroundings of each settlement is examined through the Visual Graph Analysis (maps of visual integration), land use maps and interface maps between the public and private realms. To the real social life analysis, we made (and will make) observations in loco of movement and will do interview about the changes it the population. Partial results (of space analysis and observations) shown that although less ordered and integrated with the city urban grid, the asymmetric and fragmented configuration of the favela defines a strong hierarchy, that privileges certain open spaces that works as an extension of the inhabitant’s houses, being points of confluence to encounters and passage of pedestrian and activities that has a strong public/private interface. A different spatial logic guides the formation of the housing estate Residencial São Pedro, where a homogenous and less hierarchical order pulverizes the uses. This study, still on going, points partially to the conclusion that morphological changes are altering the patterns of use of the open spaces, encounters, and consequently the community social life.
