RESUMO:

The aim of this work is to do an analysis of the contemporary city, in the light of Rem Koolhaas's thought, using his definition of Generic City and questioning his understandings, by confront them with David Harvey's and Henri Lefebvre's, in order to better understand the contemporary urban problematique. The questions to Koolhaas's thoughts came from a superficiality identified on his approach, which, despite presenting a perceptive observation of the contemporary city, does not question the observated scenario in order to better understanding it. On the contrary, Koolhaas shirks from investigate the causes and the complex processes involved on the configuration of that scenario. Therefore, it is pointed that to analyse the contemporary city with the necessary depth and complexity, it is necessary to considerate the existing dialectic between the city and the capitalism, and it is precisely in this point that Lefebvre and Harvey’s thoughts are incorporated. About the former, it is used especially his studies on the formation of the urban and the urban society (on a dialectical relationship with the capitalism system) on the production of the social space, which remits to his studies on everyday life, also used on the present analysis. About the latter, it is considerated his studies about the urban nature of the capitalist system; the dialectical evolution between accumulation and the urban process; the consequences of an alteration on the space-time dynamics, to the city and to the society (particularly observating the new role of the consumption); and the postmodern condition pointed by the author, that cand be apllied so much to Koolhaas's positions, understandings and questionings about the contemporary city. That way, after a deepening and updating of Koolhaas's contemporary city's thought as a whole, considerating his most relevant publications and also confronting his theoretical and practical production, it was identified two fundamental aspects to the dialogue with Harvey and Lefebvre: the culture of congestion and the consumption activity. Thereafter, the thoughts of the three authors are confronted using a dialectical knowledge construction process which, according to Lefebvre's undertandings, considerate the notion of totality and the existence and potential of the contradictory on the formulation of new concepts, undertandings and questionings, that on the present analisys has the purpose of better understanding the contemporary urban problemathique.
