RESUMO:
From the second half of the 20th century onwards, the initial urban nucleus of the city of Natal, classified at present as a Historical Site, went through deep and constant transformations in its spatial configuration, in such a way that these changes may be contributing to the loss of a certain perception of the site’s historical character by the city’s inhabitants, that is, its historical ambiance is probably being seriously affected. This problematic is the basis for this thesis research question: how the spatial changes in Natal Historical Site (NHS) that have been taking place since the second half of the 20th century are perceived by the city’s inhabitants? The hypothesis put forward is that the ambiance of Natal Historical Site is distancing itself from its historical quality as its physical, social, economic and cultural characteristics have been altered in a more serious and accelerated way over the last years, decreasing therefore the historical ambiance which is fitting to the place. The transformations of the urban form and the perception of the NHS historicity becomes, thus, the thesis’ object of study, and its main objective is to apprehend the presence of the NHS historical ambiance from the standpoint of those who live in the city and who know the place. The research is developed according to two theoretical and methodological lines – urban morphology and environment perception – both of them from a historical perspective. The thesis adopts the following methodological procedures: analysis of bibliography, documents and photographs, morphological and stylistic analysis (based upon an inventory) and online questionnaires with the use of photographs. The questionnaires that have been filled in up to the present indicate that despite the well-known transformations in the NHS urban form, its historicity is being identified through minimal details on the building façades, especially through the ornaments. The proto-Modern and Modern Architecture are also viewed as historical, in the same way that not only monuments are seen as having a heritage value, but the modest architecture as well. Some buildings that have undergone recent interventions but kept and included historicist traits on the façades are also being considered as an architecture of heritage value, and that indicates a confusion in the transmission of cultural values.
