RESUMO:

The topic of this work is the relationship between two movements of modernization that were underway in Brazil, during the 1930s: in pedagogy, the New School (Escola Nova) education movement, and in architecture, the Modern Movement. In the education sector, the ideas of the New School Movement (which preached teaching focused the student's knowledge process, occurring through practical activities, in response to traditional education) resulted in reforms of the public education in several states of Brazil. In order to implement the desired teaching pedagogy, new models of school buildings were designed, under the recommendation of being built according to the principles of modern architecture, at a time when this architecture was not yet consolidated in Brazil. Our general purpose is to understand the relationship between the ideas of the New School movement and the modernization of school architecture in Brazil, during the 1930s. We have the premise that modern architecture could favor the New School pedagogy, by offering more flexible and open spaces, and because there’s a coincidence of interests and speech. Our object of empirical study are the school buildings that present principles of the modern architecture built in Brazil, which resulted from educational reforms towards the implementation of the ideas of New School, during the 1930s. The sets of schools of Rio de Janeiro (1934-1937), São Paulo (1936-1939) and Paraíba (1936-1939) are already identified. Thus, we seek to clarify if, and how, different debates and ideas, in the case of pedagogy, may have influenced the modernization of architecture during that time. This work is based on the concepts of the pedagogical movement of the New School (GADOTTI, 2005; MONARCHA, 1989; MANIFESTO...,1932; TEIXEIRA, 1930); the principles of the modern school architecture (DUDEK, 2000; HILLE, 2011); and the Theory of Social Logic of Space and School Space (HILLIER; HANSON, 1984; LOUREIRO, 2000). For the adopted methodological procedures, we will confront the architectural content of the speech about such schools, found in periodicals of the time (1930-1945), with the analysis of the selected school buildings, carried out in two spheres of architecture – the formal aspects (through comparison with literature) and the spatial configuration (by space syntax). Doing so, we expect to verify if the studied school buildings correspond to the pedagogical expectations of New School movement and architectonic modernization, as it was intended when they were built.
